"This Is The Best Day Ever" by My Chemical Romance, 2002 and Me, today, October 31st, 2019

If you haven’t heard by now, My Chemical Romance is back. That’s a sentence I always hoped I’d be able to type but wasn’t ever totally sure I would.

For me, this all starts yesterday, October 30th. Frank Iero, guitarist for MCR for those who may be unaware, had posted a blurry photo of a what appeared to be a baseball game on Instagram mentioning that it was going to be raining the next day in New Jersey, washing out Halloween festivities, and they’d have to find something else to do. For some reason that struck me as odd. Halloween is also Frank’s birthday, which he made no mention of, and something about this post seemed especially cryptic for him. I sent a message to my friend Maria asking (in obnoxious all capital letters as I tend to do when I’m excited) what this meant. Neither of us knew at the time obviously, but I just had this feeling that something was afoot.

Then we jump to today, about 1 PM central time when it came to my attention that MCR had changed their facebook profile photo. When you consider that we’re over a week out from the 13th anniversary of The Black Parade, there was no immediate reason for this change, it immediately struck me as significant. Upon checking twitter, I saw the change had taken place there as well, and then the most important piece of evidence up to that point, an Instagram account.

My Chemical Romance disbanded in 2013 (March 22nd to be exact), before Instagram reached the significance it has now, and the band never created an Insta account, and today, over six years from that fateful date, there was an official band Instagram account. And not only did it exist, but it was posting stories! The first four stories were symbols with a word; A candle with the word Clarity, a droplet with a fist inside that says Courage, an open hand with another hand inside with Sacrifice, and a sun coming out of the bottom of a line, again with the hand symbol and the word Devotion. I plan to do a separate post with my thoughts on these symbols soon. Finally, just before 2 PM they posted MCR with these four symbols over the new logo and then at 2 PM they announced the reunion show in LA December 20th.

Of course, other new sources started going crazy, especially Alternative Press. Per their reporting, there has been leaks of new merch, which I plan to buy… all of it, and more importantly there are rumors of a full tour as well. What I noticed, and found especially interesting, when I got over to their Instagram account, only two of the people I follow had started following the account, Maria, and the official account for The Sylvee in Madison. I don’t want to get my hopes too high, but to see My Chemical Romance finally for the first time after being a fan of theirs for 15 years, especially to see them at my favorite venue, that would be beyond words incredible, mainly because I wasn’t sure it would ever happen!

But I think more than a tour, I would love for them to release new music. That would be the most important thing to me at this part. I’m hoping that I’ll check Spotify tonight and find maybe a new single dropped. That would be a cap on an already incredible year for music for me.

Also exciting is thinking about what this era will look like. My Chemical Romance broke the mold in terms of aesthetics for an album. They built so much into each album and that is what made them such incredible artists in my opinion. Looking at what we know so far, we’re getting cryptic symbols that feels very reminiscent of the Black Parade era, but I have a feeling that it will be more individualized to each member like with the Danger Days era. Is this why we haven’t seen, so much as heard, from the members of the band? I can’t think of any of them posting a selfie lately or appearing in any photos posted by their family members, other than maybe one a few weeks ago from Mikey Way’s wife Kristin. The last time I can recall with any certainty laying eyes on any of them was the taped panel that Gerard Way did with Jonah Ray at LA Comicon a few weeks back.

One thing is for sure, expectations are high, and I am ready to be blown away by whatever they bring to the table.
