Album Review - Manic by Halsey

Manic, Halsey’s third album, was released January 17th. Whereas with her previous albums being based in a more pop sound, both Badlands and Magic Fountain Kingdom had both rock and hip hop influences respectively, this album takes those influences and adds in even more with country twinged tracks like “Finally // beautiful stranger” and “You should be sad”.

The songs are all deeply personal in a way that allows you to know Halsey better as a person, but at the same time it makes me want to know her even more. Stand out tracks include the insanely huge single released in late 2018 “Without Me” and recently released single “You should be sad” but I think my favorite track is “I HATE EVERYBODY”. The lyrics of that song struck me the most of all the album, especially the second verse.

One point Halsey made before the album came out was to listen to the album front to back, which I argue all albums should be listened to that way, at least the first few times, and especially if it’s a concept album. While this album isn’t specifically a concept album, it does flow from one track to the next in a way that does make it the best listening experience.

If you haven't specifically listened to Halsey before, I recommend checking out this album. Her strength and vulnerability as an artist and person are riveting and honest, and it's the type of album we could use more of.
